We are most pleased to welcome you to the Afghanistan Energy Conference.
It is with a particular sense of pride – and urgency – that we have planned and sponsored this event. As I am sure you will agree, the timing could not be morefavourable. Afghanistan stands now at the gateway connecting east to west and north to south, with the potential to harness and transfervast natural resources of its own and its neighbours, which have yet remained undeveloped, to the large markets of the region and around the world. The dialogue that we are about to undertake, and the new strategic business relationships that may emerge from this conference, will contribute directly to a better collective understanding of Afghanistan’s existing energy and logistic potential and how to best utilisethat potential.
This conference is the first-eversuch gathering of Afghanistan’s government and business communitywith representatives of foreign companies, organizations, and current or potential investors. Such multifaceted participation is a most hopeful sign indeed that meaningful progress is underway, and that the momentum toward growth will continue apace.
As an intrinsic part of its energy sector development, there is need to ensure an effective security infrastructure, an efficient transportation infrastructure, and an attractive financial infrastructure. The fundamental changes affecting Afghanistan thus entail a wealth of diverse opportunities for both the country itself and for the region as well.
Needless to say, the entire world has a stake and an interest in what we do here. The challenges may be significant, but the prospects for immediate progress are exhilarating.
Once again, welcome!
